Nickcery Trains More Workers On Safety PDF Print E-mail
Solomon Amabo in Douala

The safety company, Nickcery Group International Services, on Friday 11 January continued to offer training on safety to workers of some Cameroon-based companies. This time, the safety experts who have been offering training in fire fighting, defensive driving, amongst others, taught some 72 workers of the offshore company Herculus and those of a catering enterprise, Gabon Gest, practicals on sea survival.

The training took place in the large swimming pool of a newly constructed hotel in Bali Douala.

One of the beneficiaries of the training, Samuel Ayuk Oben said “I now understand there is the need for collaboration each time there is an accident at sea”. To him when there is any danger the alarm system helps to assemble them on one spot from where they apply sea surviving methods.

Elias Diffang on his part said the training has made him to update his swimming skills. He said the intention of the training is to make sure there is zero accident in the company so that profits can be maximised. He disclosed that with proper training accidents have been greatly reduced. Joao Pedro Moreira, a Portuguese national who was amongst the trainees said he has improved his knowledge on sea surviving since he has been taking part in such trainings.

He said they learned how to work as a team in case there is any mishap while they are offshore. ‘I encourage other companies to send their workers to this kind of training in other to make sure their lives can be saved in the face of any eventuality.

The main trainer Jacques Massango who taught the trainees diving techniques, warned against panic whenever there is an accident. He said any offshore company which does not ensure its workers are taught how to leave the platform or a ship following laid down procedures is not worth its salt. He said safety is always a priority, noting that the only difficulty he faced in training some workers is that of language in countries like Yemen and Pakistan where Nickcery had offered its services.

Cameroonians, he observed, were fast in learning foreign languages than other expatriates.
According to the Area Manager of Nickcery Group for Central and West Africa, Chris C. Yok, those who were offered sea surviving training are expected to do refresher courses at least every year.

He said certificates issued by Nickcery are internationally recognised and have a lifespan of five years and can only be renewable after its bearer must have been trained.

He regretted that many Cameroonian companies were yet to fully embrace safety.
