An alleged clandestine driver identified as Paul Atiemu Chofor on Monday 5 July 2010, at the Half Mile neighbourhood in Limbe set a municipal police on fire. The incident occurred at about 2:30 pm in the afternoon.

Colleagues of the municipal police officer told Eden at the Limbe Provincial Hospital where the victim, Samuel Motulu, was receiving treatment, that the clandestine driver, just arriving from Douala was offloading his passengers at Half Mile where drivers have been banned from loading or offloading.
As he went about his business, the municipal police officers who were around monitored him from a distance, allowed the various passengers to alight from the vehicle with registration number LT 5393 O belonging to a certain Mme Nangou Leuga Epse Galamo.
The municipal policemen then surrounded the vehicle, ordering the driver to surrender his keys. The driver refused and shut all the doors of his car and as he resisted, many other municipal police who were around joined in the struggle.

Witnesses said Atiemu  later  abandoned his car with the municipal police and rushed to the Mile One area, bought the illegal petrol popularly known as ‘Zoa Zoa’ and returned to the scene where the municipal police were struggling to open the vehicle.

The alleged assailant clandestine driver later engaged the council workers in a scuffle, and later poured petrol on the municipal police and set him ablaze.

His colleagues struggled and later put off the fire, but Samuel Motulu got his right arm, chest and part of his face burnt.

He was rushed to hospital while his assailant is reported to have been badly beaten by the municipal police officers and later whisked off for detention at Limbe public security.

When Eden visited the police station the following day, family members of Atiemu were making efforts to release him on bail. One of the lawyers who was at the scene, Dikanjo Issingela said he was surprised that their client was refused to be released for him to go for medical attention.

The police officer investigating the matter, Johnson Abeng, declined making any statements pending authorisation from his boss who was too busy.

The Secretary General of the Limbe City council, Charles Arrey Nkongho declared that their worker was receiving treatment and he wanted the judiciary to arbitrate on the matter. By press time Eden learnt that the victim, Samson Motulu had been taken to the theatre for further treatment.
